Cannabis and CBD ingredients are among the most popular culinary trends in the United States, according to recent research on herbal ingredients from National Restaurant Association.
Most of the cannabis innovation is in that country.

Cannabis and CBD in numbers
According to a restaurant group survey, 77% of respondents identified cannabis/CBD-infused beverages as the #1 culinary trend.
Additionally, 76% of cannabis/CBD-infused foods are the second most popular restaurant trend.
However, The use of cannabis-derived products, including hemp and CBD, in food products is somewhat confusing.
In December 2018, the FDA issued a statement to coincide with the signing of the Agriculture Improvement Act.
The law legalized hemp, and the FDA said it is considering other potential regulatory avenues for cannabis-derived products.
Despite the “uncertainty” surrounding the regulations surrounding the use of CBD, whether derived from hemp or otherwise, the food and beverage industry has not been shy about using such products in NPD, from oils to drinks and snacks.
Significant growth of cannabis and CBD products
Innova Market Insights reports an average annual growth of 34 percent in the number of new food and beverage launches with hemp ingredients (globally, 2013-2017), with introductions in the United States.
Cereals and energy bars (24% average annual growth) were the fastest-growing subcategory of new hemp-based food and beverage launches in the United States..
In the beverage market, House of Saka launched a line of non-alcoholic wines infused with Napa Valley cannabis last year, while Flow Alkaline Spring Water, a Canadian spring water brand, launched a line of CBD-infused beverages called Flow Glow.
In August, Heineken’s Lagunitas brand launched Hi-Fi Hops, a beer made with marijuana instead of alcohol.
The cannabis market will grow even more in 2019, especially in Canadawhich has also seen a softening of the regulatory environment, as last year it became the second country, after Uruguay, to legalize the recreational use of the plant.
The Health Canada license allows Neptune to handle dried cannabis, produce and purify extracts and oils, and sell its services to other licensees.
Manufacturing activities are expected to begin soon at Neptune’s 50,000 square foot Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certified facility in Sherbrooke, Quebec.
The future of cannabis
As the regulations around CBD move from gray to bright, one can expect an increase in interest from the big players.
In September 2018, it was reported that beverage giant Coca-Cola was considering CBD-infused beverages.
The beverage company reportedly worked with Aurora Cannabis, a Canadian producer and distributor of medical marijuana.
Going green appears to be a sound business strategy that is much more widespread than anyone could have predicted just a few years ago.
