Mayra Elena Ramo, deputy director of the department for the examination of distinguishing marks “B” u Mexican Institute of Industrial Propertysaid that the mark of origin is the name of the geographical region of the country that designates the product that originates from it, and whose quality or properties are solely due to the geographical environment.

Denomination of originGrijalva cocoa” includes green or roasted/ground cacao of the Theobroma Cacao species, which comes from the Grijalva region of Tabasco, which consists of three production sub-regions, called Chontalpa, Sierra and Centro.

With the aim of obtaining the international protection granted by ““Lisbon Agreement on the Protection of Designations of Origin and Their International Registration” under the administration of the World Intellectual Property Organization, the Mexican government applied for international registration of the new Mexican designation of origin.

The “Lisbon Agreement” represents a way of obtaining international protection for the designation of origin in the contracting parties through a unified registration procedure.
