Food labelling: the key to the purchase decision

Consumers are consulted with food labeling because they consult the information they consider essential such as the expiration date or best before, ingredients and conditions of storage and use of the product.

Furthermore, consumers like to know what they are eating, which is why they are completely interested in the composition of food, and prefer to food labeling reflect the full list of ingredients.

Nutri-Score food labeling

One of the tools of public health policies to promote a healthy diet is the labeling of nutritional values, regulated in the European Union by Regulation (EU) no. 1169/2011 on food information provided to the consumer.

Nutri-Score labeling is based on a food classification system based on five letters and five colors, in order to inform consumers in a simple way about the nutritional quality of food and drinks, complementary to the mandatory declaration of nutritional value established by European regulations.

The goal of implementing Nutri-Score on the front label of products, is to make it easier for consumers to understand nutritional information on food labels. Likewise, the aim is to promote and strengthen various existing public health policies, such as food reformulation and education for healthy eating.

The purpose is to enable the selection of the most suitable and healthiest food option, encouraging the consumer to have a healthier food environment and easy access to baskets and a varied, healthy and balanced diet, encouraging healthy decision-making.

Benefits of Nutri-Score labeling

  1. This classification system establishes 5 levels (from “A” to “E”, with “A” being the grade of highest nutritional quality).
  2. The classification into one or another category is carried out by calculating the total rating in relation to the content of nutrients in 100 grams of the product:
  • Those considered “the most favorable” from a nutritional point of view: protein, dietary fiber and the percentage of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and olive oil, canola oil and walnuts.
  • Those considered “less favorable” from a nutritional point of view: calories, sugars, saturated fat and sodium.

Food labeling in Mexico

Front labeling consists of a system of signs located on the front of the container indicating the content of different products. Warning labeling requires foods high in sugar, salt or fat to have a black octagon with white lettering that says “high in…”.

Given the country’s high rates of obesity and overweight, this labeling will allow consumers to identify products that are high in calories, sugar, trans fat, saturated fat and excess sodium.
