Šabić, in cooperation with Scientex, set a number of goals to facilitate the development of materials for the production of the world’s first flexible food packaging made from ocean bound plastic (OBP) advanced recycling.
This material is made of certified circular polypropylene (PP) author Šabić. It is currently used in premium brand noodle packaging sold in Malaysia.

How is ocean plastic used?

- The project uses OBP that is recovered and transformed into pyrolysis oil through an advanced recycling process. Šabić uses this oil as an alternative raw material for the production of certified circular PP polymer, which is further processed into film. biooriented polypropylene (BOPP).
Šabić’s certified circular PP, which has 30% OBP content included in the mass balance, has the same characteristics as PP based on intact fossils. For this reason, it can be used directly as an alternative in production flexible packaging for foodwithout the need to change existing assets and processes.
The importance of revaluation and recycling
The European Commission conducted a study in which it is estimated that by 2030, the amount of plastic packaging waste in the region will increase by 19% and could reach 46%.
Due to this situation, European Union (EU) seeks to implement a series of goals that are focused on innovation and development of new materials and packaging, as well as revaluation and recycling processes.
- In response to this panorama, Technological Institute for Plastics implements the Biotools project funded by the Ministry of Innovation, University, Science and Digital Society of the Generalitat Valenciana.
