Major avocado-producing countries have come together to create the first global avocado organization, the World Avocado Organization (WAO), following Fruit Logistica last week in Berlin. The goal of the new organization is to promote the consumption of avocados in the European Union, Asia and other parts of the world, excluding the United States because there is a legislative framework for promoting the fruit in that country. The founding countries were Brazil, Mexico, Peru, South Africa and the United States.
“The World Avocado Organization represents the creation of a major international agricultural group that has been years in the making and is to date the only multinational global marketing organization of its kind for fruit and vegetable products,” said Mr James. Bosworth of ProHass del Perú, president of the WAO.
“The world is getting smaller and smaller and this too super food “It has achieved a global reach, and people around the world are appreciating the nutritional benefits of avocados as a superfood and delicious taste,” said Mr. Zac Bard of Westphalia, WAO Vice President.
The idea of a global organization for the promotion of avocados dates back several years, but after eight years of discussions, the project came to light during the VIII World Congress on Avocados in Lima, Peru.
The general purpose of the organization is to promote consumption avocados in the second largest avocado consumer market in the world, the European Union, as well as in developing markets in Asia, such as China and Japan, as well as in other areas of the world.
The first list of WAO officers are: Director for Peru Mr. James Bosworth of ProHass, President; Director for South Africa, Mr. Zac Bard of Westphalia, Vice President; Director for Mexico, Mr. Ignacio González, Avo-Select, Secretary; and USA Director, Mr. Jim Donovan of Mission Produce, Treasurer.
