They predict a new failure in garbage recycling

Experts warn that it will be difficult for the residents of the capital to separate their waste into as many as seven parts, as only 20 percent of them currently do so.

The separation of household waste into five to seven classes to facilitate its complete recycling will be mandatory from July in Mexico City, with the entry into force of an environmental standard for the separation, classification, selective collection and storage of waste. Waste, but it is precisely in households that waste is separated the least due to the lack of spatial conditions, in addition to cultural reasons for performing this task, experts and the capital say.

Even eight years ago, it was determined that the waste generated in the household must be taken separately to trucks for collection, but according to official data, only 20 percent of the population respects this measure, while the rest leave the work to cleaners and cleaners. .

Luis Raúl Tovar, from the Interdisciplinary Center for Research and Studies on Environment and Development (CIIEMAD), from the IPN, believes that the new provision will require wide distribution so that the population knows, understands its advantages and, finally, tries to apply it because from the moment in a moment it will be difficult.

The division into five or six parts in a house-room for two people seems unreal to me. What would be worth it is to gradually make the population aware and start to recover, as much as possible… at first it will be very difficult for the population to accept. “It takes a strong communication effort to tell them what it’s all about and why they’re doing it,” he said in an interview.

The new provision of the Ministry of Environmental Protection seeks to reduce the amount of waste that must be taken to landfills to almost zero, to make maximum use of those that have recycling potential, and to turn all organic waste into compost.

According to the report of the Ministry of Labor and Services (Sobsa), 12,700 tons of solid waste is generated every day; 40 percent of it is organic, and 60 percent is inorganic.

Of the 7,620 tons of inorganic materials, of which the largest generation comes from homes, only 2,500 are separated and recycled, either by the population who take them for sale in collection centers or by cleaning staff.

The city’s solid waste inventory shows that on average each resident produces 2.5 kilograms of garbage, and the districts with the highest daily production are Iztapalapa with 2,274 tons; GAM, with 1,702; Cuauhtémoc with 1,320; Venustiano Carranza with 851 and Miguel Hidalgo with 804.

Yolanda Alonso, director of the Department of Environmental Education at Seven, said they strive to reduce the amount of waste going to the five open landfills contracted by GDF in the state of Mexico and Morelos, ensuring almost 100 percent recycling.

He added that he will promote the circular economy by promoting the separation of garbage from the home, keeping it clean and offering it in collection centers as a raw material for the production of, for example, fuel.

We will become generators of waste, generators of raw materials, which will reduce their extraction in nature”, he indicated.

In this regard, Luis Raúl Tovar said that it is naive of local authorities to think that people will collect and separate their waste to sell it for cents or pesos.

I hope not, because that would mean that the economic situation is worse, that position is insane. If we can make the population aware that they separate, we would have a guarantee that there will be no unpleasant odors and that it will be practically clean, because washing the garbage so that it does not lose its value is unrealistic,” he said.

The GDF plans to launch an information and awareness campaign about separation, mainly for those who leave the house, and in coordination with the delegations, it plans to launch it in a few weeks, so that separation will become natural by the middle of the year.

They leave the “package” to the delegations

Domestic collection of solid waste is the responsibility of each delegation, so they will be the first filter for compliance with environmental protection standards.

Each demarcation is already planning how it will face its application, since it will have to deal with neighbors who do not adhere to the separation, but without the authority to sanction, and at the same time they must guarantee that the material arrives classified at the transport facilities.

The delegation of Iztapalapa is the one that concentrates the largest generation of garbage in the entire city, they will start from scratch to promote the separation of organic and inorganic waste so that they can expand it by the middle of the year.

First we will launch this organic and inorganic campaign; We will have training with Seven and we will announce that a bigger separation is coming, but we have to start with the first steps,” said Dione Anguiano, head of the delegation.

He explained that he will adequately apply the waste separation program in state offices, and at the same time, together with Sedem, he will seek the arrangement of collection centers to encourage the circulation of recyclable garbage.

We need to generate mechanisms so that people can have an economic good through separation and it can be quickly transferred to spaces where it can be used, and not stored for a long time and look like garbage,” he said.

For his part, Nicolás Mollinedo, Director of the Department of Waste Collection and Treatment in Cuauhtémoc, explained that they are already preparing an extensive campaign and training of the population for proper separation.

He explained that almost 1,700 tons of garbage are produced in the district every day, and only 30 percent is disposed of separately into organic and inorganic, and they are trying to increase that figure to 60 percent with new removal measures that will be put into operation months before the standards come into force.

In April, we should start separating Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We will no longer collect anything organic on Monday. Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday inorganic, regardless of companies where the collection is more industrial and they deliver it separately,” the official explained.

He admitted that the population’s lack of interest in separating garbage is based on the frustration of seeing it stirred up by the staff driving the collection trucks, but these are international standards that must be met, he said, and everyone must commit to it.

Perhaps that same citizen did not separate because he saw that the cleaning lady, that is, the delegation, was stirring them up in front of her; Now they will see a change with instructions for better billing,” said Mollinedo.

In the delegation of Miguel Hidalgo, the government’s plan is to establish third-party garbage collection. However, they realize that since 2008, when the simple separation into organic and inorganic was mandatory, the population still does not comply 100%.

Víctor Hugo Acosta, deputy director of Camino, commented that there are colonies where this has been carried out since the beginning of the supply, and currently they are the ones that carry out the best separation, already as part of their daily habits.

In neighborhoods like Escandón or San Miguel Chapultepec, people are used to separating garbage, it costs them less work, and there are others where they do not separate anything and workers have to do it, at least the primary, organic and inorganic,” Acosta said.

He considered it necessary to launch a large campaign at the central level to inform and prepare people for the new garbage collection system.

It will take a lot more time because the separation of organic and inorganic is still not carried out 100 percent from the source, especially homes,” he warned.
