Elena Alvarez Buylla, warned that behind genetically modified organisms and their application there are advantages and risks that must be properly analyzed. “The reality is that genetically modified food is already on the supermarket shelves and on the table of each of us. The products that are most represented on the market are corn, of which there are several varieties: virus-resistant papaya and herbicide-tolerant soybeans. The latter takes first place in in the world for the expansion of cultivation as transgenic food”, the experts pointed out.

For its part, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that available genetically modified food is safe for health, but has found that it can affect the environment through contamination of conventional crops.
